Frequency Perception

The thing that makes audio, frequency, and equalization so challenging (and fun!) is the fact that there are almost a dozen things that color our perception of frequency, meaning what we hear isn't actually real!

In this section, you'll learn the "how" and "why" behind frequency perception so you can be operating from a place of understand and neutrality, and you'll also learn about a few awesome tools that will help you hear the truth!

Basic Equalization

This section is mostly review of the Beginner's Guide to Equalization course, but is ultimately a great refresher for how to approach a well recorded voice. We'll sweep for resonant frequencies, tame some harshness, and create 3 great sounded vocals with 2 male and 1 female voice.
Male Voice, Dynamic Mic, Great Acoustics
Female Voice, Small Diaphragm Condenser Mic, No Acoustic Treatment
Male Voice, Dynamic Mic, Minimal Acoustic Treatment

Dynamic Equalization

Dynamic equalization is an INCREDIBLE advanced feature that is unfortunately not available on all EQ plugins, however I recommend a couple that will work well on most budgets.

Dynamic equalization will EQ a frequency range, but not all the time. There are quite a few reasons why we might want to use dynamic EQ, and they'll all be discussed in addition to a handful of listening exercises and walkthroughs on a male and female voice.

We'll also close down the course with the ultimate cheat code, a dynamic resonance suppressor!

Corrective Equalization

This section of the course covers how to deal with audio that was recorded poorly, whether from terrible recording platforms, bad microphone technique, or less than ideal environments.

Most creators (especially podcasters) will run into these less than ideal circumstances often, so it's important to learn how we can identify massive problem areas in bad sounding audio in order to make the product more palatable.

Comparative Equalization

I may have made up the term "comparative equalization" but what it addresses is one of the biggest stressors I hear my students facing, how to get multiple voices to sound good together.

Every voice, every microphone, every performance, and every environment is unique and (hopefully) beautiful in its own way, but it's important that every voice in your podcast or film plays well with the other's it interacts with. That's what you'll learn how to do in EXTREME detail in this module!
